A tree's health depends just as much on what lies beneath the surface as what can be seen above it. While trunks, branches and leaves often receive the most attention, the root system is responsible for supplying water, nutrients and structural stability throughout the tree's lifetime.

During construction projects, landscaping works or years of heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic, soil within the Root Protection Area (RPA) can become heavily compacted. As soil particles are compressed together, the tiny air spaces that normally hold oxygen and water disappear. This prevents roots from breathing, reduces water infiltration and limits the tree's ability to absorb essential nutrients.

Left untreated, soil compaction can contribute to declining tree health, poor growth, premature leaf loss, dieback, increased susceptibility to pests and disease, and in severe cases, structural instability.

What Is a Root Protection Area?

The Root Protection Area (RPA) is the area surrounding a tree that contains the majority of its structural and absorbing roots. It is recognised within British Standards and is designed to minimise damage during construction and development.

Protecting this area helps preserve the tree's long-term health by preventing:

  • Soil compaction

  • Root damage

  • Reduced oxygen availability

  • Poor drainage

  • Root suffocation

  • Long-term decline

Even when excavation is avoided, repeated vehicle movements, machinery, storage of materials or heavy foot traffic can still significantly affect the soil beneath the surface.

Biochar is a highly porous natural material that acts like a sponge beneath the ground.

It stores water during wetter periods while allowing excess water to drain away through newly created soil pathways. During drier conditions it slowly releases moisture back into the surrounding soil, helping roots remain hydrated.

How our Geo Injector works

1. Soil Decompaction

Our process begins by inserting the Vogt Geo Injector approximately one metre into the ground. High-pressure compressed air is then released to safely fracture compacted soil, creating a network of underground channels and air pockets. This relieves years of soil compression without the need for excavation, providing the foundation for healthier soil.

2. Injection of Enriched Biochar

Once the underground channels have been created, we inject a specialist enriched biochar into the newly formed voids. This long-lasting natural soil improver stabilises the channels while increasing the soil's ability to retain moisture, nutrients, and oxygen. Unlike temporary treatments, biochar remains in the ground, delivering benefits for years to come.

3. Improved Water Drainage

With the compacted soil relieved and biochar in place, rainwater can move freely through the newly created underground pathways instead of collecting on the surface. This significantly improves natural drainage, helping to eliminate waterlogged lawns, reduce surface flooding, and prevent standing water after heavy rainfall.
